Ahead of the 2019 election general elections slated for Saturday January 16, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC began the accreditation Journalists to cover the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Delta State as sensitive electoral materials are yet to arrive its Office

The distribution of the accreditation tags and kits began at about 2pm, some of the Journalists are yet to collect their accreditation tags after submitted their particulars from their various Media Establishments and applied for INEC for accreditation.

The Liberator reports that the accreditation may not go round the Journalists, a similar situation that has forced the Bayelsa NUJ to boycott coverage of the election.

The Delta State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Delta Council. Comrade Michael Ikeogwu in a chat with our reporter expressed sadness over the manner over the INEC accreditation.

Comrade Ikeogwu said,”We are not happy with this way INEC is handling the accreditation of Journalists in the State.

“So many people applied but they are saying they can only accredit 100 persons. INEC is not being fair to us.

“If INEC should increase the number of accreditation Journalists. If they are short of cards for accreditation, they should mandate Journalists to use their Company’s ID Cards to cover the election.

“Federal Government spends Billions of naira on INEC but they cannot provide ID Cards for accreditation of Journalists.

” Is INEC hiding anything from us? Does INEC have any skeleton in their cupboards that they don’t want Journalists to know? These are the questions INEC in Abuja and Asaba must answer.”

INEC Staff on duty at the time Our Correspondent visited declined comments on the matter.
The Liberator also gathered that some staff of the Commission particularly the Public Relations Officer,PRO have just been redeployed.

It would be recalled that the Resident Electoral Commissioner,REC and some Staff just resumed work in Delta State barely two weeks ago.
