A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE FIRST NEC MEETING OF THE 8TH IJAW YOUTH COUNCIL WORLDWIDE HELD AT IJAW HOUSE, YENAGOA.

Following the successful transition and electoral process of the Ijaw Youth Council, the 8th NEC  commends all relevant stakeholders and leaders of thought and observed that it is most expedient for the Ijaw nation to rise in unison to bestow the confidence to confront the challenges of environmental remediation, political and economic marginalization of our communities.

The 8th NEC believes that the only precondition to a sustainable economic and political development of the Ijaw nation is when the Ijaw people sheath all forms of disunity and embrace sacrifice, in confronting the challenges in line with the Kaiama Declaration.

It is unfortunate and very worrisome that one way the purveyors or the enemies of our economic and political advancement, has succeeded, is for them to relegate our noble cause (agitation) through unnecessary legal litigations.

Therefore, NEC reiterated that unity is sacrosanct to our progress and stability. NEC further reached the following resolutions:

1. LITIGATIONS

NEC frowned at the incessant situations where the Ijaw Youth Council is embroiled with legal issues, making it a premeditated ploy for Council to be distracted in pursuant to the sacred Kaima Declaration, which gives credence to the struggle for resource control and true federalism. NEC further adopted the resolution reached at the 8th Convention held at Oporoza, that any member who approaches the court with regards to Council’s activities without first utilizing the internal dispute resolution mechanisms should be henceforth expelled from Council.

2. RECONCILIATION PROCESS

True development is untenable without a genuine reconciliatory process of peace, unity, and exchange of ideas. NEC has therefore set up a Post Election Committee headed by the Deputy President of Council, Comrade Saviour Olale with the mandate of creating a framework for an all inclusive government while also resolving pockets of grievances where there are any.

3. ON THE PRESIDENTIAL AMNESTY PROGRAMME

NEC calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to as a matter of urgency appoint a substantive  SA/ Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme and implement  the  remaining phases of the program as agreed upon before the declaration of the programme.

4. NDDC, IMC/ NASS SAGA

The 8th NEC frowns at the accusations and counter-accusations between the National Assembly and the Interim Management Committee of  the NDDC. Hence NEC agreed  to embark on a fact-finding mission to ascertain the true position of things and make recommendations after due consultation with critical stakeholders from the region. NEC also call on the full implementation of the Niger-Delta Development Plan.

CONCLUSION

Addressing our underdevelopment requires total commitment and utmost tolerance for all players: this means unity, peace, and no legal redress in Council’s activities as well a genuine reconciliation process that will strengthen and mitigate the economic prosperity of the Ijaw nation. NEC therefore thank Ijaw nation, for the opportunity given to them to serve Ijaw Nation at this crucial time of our history.
