The Ijaw Peoples Development Initiative, IPDI has again knocked His Excellency, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa to give directive for the immediate release of funds to complete the Ayakoromo bridge project in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.
IPDI noted that though due to interventions from the Delta State Government and other political leaders in the area, it has jettisoned the planned protest over governments refusal to complete the bridge project, stressing that the delay is becoming worrisome.
This was made known to newsmen in Warri yesterday, a copy of which was sent to The Liberator Newspaper, signed by the duo of Comr. Austin Ozobo, national president of the Ijaw Peoples Development Initiative, IPDI and Comr. Mayor Timi Ogobiri, Spokesperson of the group.
They explained that an appeal was made by Okowa through his information commissioner, Mr. Charlse Aniagwu, when he confirmed that funds had been appropriated for the completion of the Ayakoromo bridge.
They noted that after considering the appeal from government arising from an enlarged meeting held in Warri comprising the leadership of IPDI, and Ayakoromo Community Youths, they agreed to temporarily suspend the protest.
They however warned the government not to politicise the project considering its significance to the economy of the people of the area and also ensure that the fund for the project is included at the first quarterly budgetary release for the year.
They said “it is our warning that Dr Ifeanyi Okowa should not play politics with Ayakoromo community bridge project as regards its importance and that fund alledged to have been appropriated for the project be released now or at most the first quarter of the budgetary year to avert shutdown Of Government House, Asaba.
”It is worthy of note that Ayakoromo bridge is a choice project. A project with much economy benefits. It is the only capital project in the whole of Burutu Local Government Area. No well meaning Government will abandon such a project, considering its economic importance. Dr Ifeanyi Okowa should release fund now for the bridge to avoid shutdown of Government house, Asaba”
The statement emphasised that “The protest has not been called off, but this is a temporal ceasefire to enable the Government release fund now or at most the first quarter of the budgetary year for the project and that the protest will continue for any failure of the Government to release fund before March ending”
