Some of the reasons given for the shutdown include lack of outstanding payment to the host communities, negligence, a master servant relationship and other burning issues.

The protest which was jointly carried out by Leaders of the said communities, chiefs, women and youths wings had all stormed the facility to shutdown the operation, stressing that the company has failed woefully in its cooperate social responsibilities with her hosts, adding that it will remain shutdown until SEEPCO meets the demands of the communities.
