According to reports reaching the news desk of The Liberator Newspapers Worldwide, a massive oil spillage has occurred at Opuama community in Egbema Kingdom, Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State at the Elcrest and NPDC Operated Oml 40.

The oil spillage alarm was raised by a revered youth group in the area operating under the aegis of Opuama Youth Assembly Warri ( OYAW) via a statement issued to newsmen at Opuama signed by the trio of president – Felix D. Gorroh, Shola K, Korokoro, Public Relations Officer (PRO) as well as Ezekiel Ugulapelewei, Secretary General of (OYAW).

However, the statement had called on the managements of Elcrest & NPDC to immediately take up responsibilities by urgently embarking on the cleaning of the Opuama community waterways and neighbouring communities in the Kingdom that the spill is now spreading to other areas  via the water current.

They noted that on their visit to the community, they were briefed and saw that the spill has occurred for some days now, fuming that till this moment, the said Elcrest & NPDC, handlers of the facility is yet to take any step on the matter with a view of salvaging the situation.

Recounting the hardship suffered by the Opuama people, the trio of Gorroh, Shola and Ugulapewei had noted that fishes  are dying in their numbers as fisher men and women can no longer fish in the river due to the oil spillage, stressing that residents in the area and other aquatic lives have become endangered species.

The Warri branch of Opuama Youth Assembly had alleged that the oil spillage was caused by a likage of an oil pipeline in the Opuama axis of OML 40, operated by Elcrest & NPDC.

While calling on Elcrest & NPDC to urgently send medical professionals to Opuama to examine the health condition of indigenes of the community and to nearby settlements, OYAW had tasked the companies to without further delay send relief materials to Opuama and all other affected communities in the area to ameliorate their sufferings owing to the massive spill.

Meanwhile, the group had called on the Federal Government of Nigeria, Delta State Government, Warri North Local Government as well as other relevant agencies to come to their rescue as life is becoming unbearable for the people.

“Urgent step should be taken with immediate effect, I witness it my self early hours of this morning, when I was passing with a passenger speed boat we find it difficult to breath, due to the excessive or offensive odour of the gas. Aquatic lives has been affected, women can no longer go for their fishing activities because  of fear of possible fire outbreak.  Opuama people are  crying , this is a SOS. We are using this medium to call on the federal and Delta State government to please  urgently call  npdc/elcrest to order by doing the needful,  since they are the owners of the burst pipeline to immediately send medical team of professional doctors and relief materials, because  as it is now,  the indigenes cannot go  out for their daily business activities.”Shola Korokoro stated.

Nevertheless, all efforts geared towards reaching out to the management of Elcrest & NPDC to hear their reactions on the matter proves abortive.
