By Binebai Princewill
There seems to be tension silently brewing in Delta state following the nine (9) weeks ultimatum issued to the management of Chevron/Nigeria Petroleum Development Company, NPDC by youths of Egbema Kingdom in Warri North Local Government of the state.
The ultimatum was signed and issued to newsmen by the Public Relations Officer, P. R. O of the Egbema Youth Progressive Foundation, EYPF, Comr. Governor Ekpokeme.

In giving historical insight, Comr. Ekpokeme noted that the multinational oil giants, Chevron canalized Polobubou creek in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State to Awoye community in Ondo State in 1991 for easy exploration of oil in the Kingdom.
The statement regretted that this is 29 years after, the creeks of Polobubou have become shallow and dangerous to fisher men and women, stressing that over the years the Chevron and its partners are yet to adequately address the underdevelopmental question of the Polobubou/Tsekelewu.
On the reason behind the ultimatum, Comr. Governor noted that the many years of negligence meted out on his people occasioned the ultimatum.
However, the statement had also appealed to the Federal Government of Nigeria, Delta State Government, the Warri North Local Government Leadership and other developmental agencies in the country to fashion out ways for the development of Polobubou/Tsekelewu and by extension the enitire Egbema Kingdom.
Meanwhile, the statement maintained that Egbema Kingdom in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State is contributing massively economically to the coffers of the federation, state and council, owing to its oil producing status.
The statement read in full below:

CHEVRON NIGERIA LIMITED/ NPDC STOP SUFFERING THE GOOD PEOPLE OF POLOBUBO/ TSEKELEWU HOST COMMUNITY

The good people of Polobubo(Tsekelewu) Communities are very aggrieved about Chevron Nigeria limited refusal to dredge Polobubo communities creek. Chevron Nigeria limited had canalized Polobubo Creek to Awoye Community in Ondo state in order to ease their operations since 1991 which is very close to sea after about 29year. It follows from the sea to our creeks. Chevron refused to dredge the creeks since then. We have been suffering from this sad and annoying situation, the fishermen can no longer catch fish and transporters find it difficult to apply the route because the engines always get faults after applying those creeks in Polobubo and it’s environs and due to this perilous situation, the transport price is in a high side now. Even based on the bad conditions of the creek his excellency the executive governor of Delta state SEN. AUTHOR IFEANYI OKOWA could not get to Polobubou community to commission projects he supposed to have come to commissioned by himself last year

I am using this medium to call on the federal, state, local governments and every other relevant agencies to fashion out ways to develop our Community due to the huge amount of revenue we have being generating to the economical growth of the government and the oil Companies.

Please urgently pay attention to our plight and dredging of Polobubo Communities creeks should commence as soon as possible.

Therefore, the people of Polobubo Communities are giving Chevron and the government agencies 9 weeks autimatum to start work on the dredging of our rivers without delay because the issue is unbearable at this point in time.

We can no longer admit any kind of marginalization and humiliation by Chevron for their perilous activities in our terrain.

We are one of the major oil producing host Community (OML 40, OPUEKEBA FIELD, ALERO FIELD AND NPDC/ ELCRATS) in Warri north local government area of Delta State but we are suffering in the midst of enormous resources due to lack of government presence in our dear Kingdom.

We can’t play second fiddle in our own land that cannot enjoy what the almighty God has blessed us with.

It is so lugubrious that, our country Nigeria depends 100% on our natural endowment but they left us behind in agony, suffering and abject poverty.

Signed: Comr. Governor Ekpokeme
