By Kaka Pere

Indigenes of Odidi Federated Community in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State have raised a fresh alarm over the worsening impact of an oil spill which they say has continued to threaten their livelihoods, environment and wellbeing for more than six months.

The residents made the appeal during a visit to the community on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, as they called on the Federal Government, Delta State Government, Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited (HEOSL) and relevant regulatory agencies to urgently intervene in the situation.

The community also appealed for the immediate commencement of a comprehensive cleanup of the affected environment, alongside the provision of adequate relief materials to residents whose livelihoods have reportedly been disrupted by the pollution.

During the visit, relief items reportedly provided by HEOSL were displayed in the community. The materials included bags of garri and rice, cartons of groundnut oil, tubers of yam and rams.

However, residents expressed disappointment over the quantity of the items, insisting that they were insufficient to meet the needs of the numerous households affected by the spill.

A woman leader, who pleaded anonymity, said the community was not merely seeking food but demanding what she described as its rights and adequate intervention to address the consequences of the pollution.

“We are not begging for food. What we are demanding for is our right which must be given to us. Unless more relief materials are coming, these ones are inadequate to go round,” she said.

The Odidi Youth President, Comrade Meneko Friday, acknowledged the relief intervention by Heritage Energy but said the materials provided could not adequately cushion the hardship experienced by residents.

“We appreciate that some relief materials have been brought, but what was provided is not enough considering the number of people affected and the period we have been living with the consequences of this spill,” he said.

According to him, the immediate priority should go beyond temporary relief to the restoration of the polluted environment.

“But more importantly, what we need urgently is a proper cleanup of our environment. We also need medical professionals to come and assess the health of our people because we have been exposed to this situation for too long,” Meneko added.

The youth leader appealed directly to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to intervene in the crisis and ensure that residents of the creek community also benefit from government programmes.

“Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Ukodo is your title. Please bring Ukodo to us in the creek, we are begging you. Let us also enjoy the dividends of your administration because we are suffering,” he appealed.

He further warned that continued neglect could deepen the hardship being experienced by the people, stressing that the peaceful disposition of the community should not be mistaken for an absence of suffering.

The residents said the environmental impact of the spill was particularly concerning because many members of the community depend on fishing, waterways and other natural resources for their livelihoods.

They therefore called for an independent assessment of the affected areas to establish the extent and cause of the pollution and determine the appropriate remediation measures.

The community also appealed to the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and other relevant federal and state authorities to visit the affected locations, conduct proper investigations and ensure that the polluted environment is effectively cleaned and restored.

Another major concern raised by the residents was the possible health implications of prolonged exposure to the polluted environment.

They called for the immediate deployment of qualified medical personnel to conduct health assessments, particularly for children, women, elderly persons and other residents who may have been exposed to the affected environment.

The community further urged Heritage Energy to intensify engagement with residents and community leadership while increasing the volume of relief materials being distributed to affected households. While appreciating the intervention already made, the indigenes maintained that relief materials alone could not resolve the crisis.

They insisted that the ultimate solution must involve the restoration of the environment, protection of aquatic resources and measures to safeguard the livelihoods of people who depend on the creek for survival.

As the community continues to wait for a lasting solution, residents are appealing for urgent and coordinated action from Heritage Energy, the Federal Government, Delta State Government and relevant environmental and petroleum regulatory authorities.

For the people of Odidi, the message is clear: the spill is not just an environmental incident; it is a threat to their homes, livelihoods and future.

Their cry is for immediate relief, medical intervention, environmental cleanup and a lasting solution to the oil spill crisis.

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide has congratulated Dr. Doubra Collins Okotete and other members of the 10th National Executive Council (NEC)-elect following their emergence at the Council’s National Convention and election held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre.

The Council described the successful conduct of the election as another significant milestone in the democratic history of the IYC, noting that the exercise was transparent, free, fair and credible, reflecting the commitment of Ijaw youths to democracy, unity and the advancement of the Ijaw struggle.

In a statement signed by its Spokesman, Amb. Binebai Yerin Princewill, on Monday, the Council expressed confidence that the incoming administration led by Dr. Okotete would sustain the ideals of the IYC while improving on the achievements of previous administrations through purposeful leadership, the promotion of unity among Ijaw people and the protection of the collective interests of the Niger Delta.

The statement noted that the mandate entrusted to the newly elected leadership comes with enormous responsibility, expressing optimism that the President-elect and his team would justify the confidence reposed in them by leading with integrity, inclusiveness, courage and commitment to the founding principles of the Council.

The IYC also commended the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, for his role in restoring peace, stability and unity within the organisation, stating that his intervention and commitment to dialogue created the enabling environment for a peaceful convention and successful election.

The Council equally expressed appreciation to Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, High Chief Kestin Pondi, Asari Dokubo, Ateke Michael Tom, Kingsley Kuku, former Presidents of the IYC Worldwide, High Chief Promise Lawuru, Chief Boro Opudu and other respected Ijaw leaders and stakeholders for their roles in brokering peace ahead of the convention.

According to the Council, the sacrifices, wise counsel and commitment of the leaders to reconciliation were instrumental in creating the atmosphere of unity that made the successful conduct of the election possible.

The statement further acknowledged that the peace recorded before and during the convention was the product of collective sacrifice by leaders, elders, former officers, delegates, contestants, stakeholders and members across the Council’s clans, chapters and zones, who placed the unity of the Ijaw nation above personal interests.

The IYC also applauded the 2026 National Electoral Committee, led by Charles Ikimi PhD, for conducting what it described as a transparent, free, fair and credible election. It said the committee demonstrated professionalism, neutrality and transparency throughout the electoral process, thereby strengthening confidence in the Council’s democratic tradition.

While congratulating all members of the 10th NEC-elect, the Council urged them to regard their election as a call to selfless service and visionary leadership, stressing that the expectations of Ijaw youths remain high.

It added that the new leadership is expected to promote unity, defend the rights and interests of the Ijaw people, and advance the struggle for justice, equity, environmental sustainability, resource ownership and accelerated development of the Niger Delta.

The Council also appealed to contestants, delegates, stakeholders and members of the IYC Worldwide to put the election behind them and rally support for the incoming leadership in the interest of the unity and progress of the Ijaw nation.

The statement noted that the 10th National Executive Council-elect would be formally inaugurated on July 22, 2026, expressing confidence that the new leadership would begin its tenure with renewed commitment, vision and dedication to serving the Ijaw people.

By The Liberator Newspapers As Nigeria commemorates World SMEs Day, international finance expert, Principal Lecturer...

By The Liberator Newspapers

As Nigeria commemorates World SMEs Day, international finance expert, Principal Lecturer at the University of Bedfordshire, and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Dr. Seyefar Clement, has identified stronger private sector participation and a fully operational South South Development Commission (SSDC) as two critical pillars for unlocking the immense potential of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria.

In this exclusive interview with The Liberator Newspapers, Dr. Clement speaks extensively on the importance of SMEs to Nigeria’s economy, the challenges limiting their growth, the impact of private sector initiatives such as the Kestin Pondi Foundation, the need to fully activate the SSDC, and the policy reforms required to transform small businesses into sustainable engines of national economic prosperity.

The Liberator Newspapers: Dr. Clement, today Nigeria joins the global community to commemorate World SMEs Day. Looking at the current economic climate, how crucial are small and medium enterprises to the nation’s recovery and long-term economic stability?

Dr. Seyefar Clement: They are the literal backbone. When we look at sustainable economic development, we cannot ignore the sheer volume of economic activity generated by small businesses. In Nigeria, SMEs make up the vast majority of businesses and employ millions of our citizens. They are the engines of innovation, youth empowerment, and wealth creation. However, their potential remains largely locked because we treat them as passive actors rather than the primary drivers of national prosperity. If we want true economic stability, our national and regional policies must reflect the critical nature of these enterprises.

The Liberator Newspapers: Your commentary specifically highlighted private sector initiatives, and you commended the Kestin Pondi Foundation. How exactly do foundations like this change the narrative for struggling entrepreneurs?

Dr. Seyefar Clement: The financing gap confronting Nigerian entrepreneurs is massive. Traditional commercial banks often demand collateral or impose interest rates that emerging businesses simply cannot survive. This is where the Kestin Pondi Foundation becomes a vital case study. By stepping in to offer targeted financial support and resources, they are bridging a severe structural deficit.

Beyond the immediate financial relief, initiatives like the Kestin Pondi Foundation serve a deeper strategic purpose: they demonstrate exactly how private organisations and dedicated individuals can complement government efforts. Government cannot do it alone. When private foundations step up to fund and empower local enterprise, they create a ripple effect that reduces youth unemployment and fosters community-level wealth creation. It is an exemplary model of proactive civic responsibility.

The Liberator Newspapers: Moving from private initiatives to regional governance, you have strongly advocated for the immediate activation and full operationalisation of the South South Development Commission (SSDC). Why is this specific commission so critical to the region’s economic future?

Dr. Seyefar Clement: The South South region is blessed with an incredible abundance of both human and natural resources, yet the economic reality on the ground does not fully reflect this wealth. The South South Development Commission possesses enormous potential to completely rewrite that narrative.

When fully activated and functional, the SSDC should not just be another administrative body; it must serve as a regional economic catalyst. It has the mandate to invest heavily in critical infrastructure, encourage local innovation, and deliberately build an enabling environment where small businesses can thrive sustainably. By channeling regional strategy toward supporting local SMEs and establishing industrial clusters, the Commission can stimulate unprecedented growth that will benefit not just the Niger Delta, but the entire national economy. We need it fully active, focused, and operational without delay.

The Liberator Newspapers: Many argue that the primary problem facing Nigerian SMEs is simply a lack of access to capital. You have argued that sustainable growth requires a much broader approach. What are we missing?

Dr. Seyefar Clement: Throwing money at a broken system will never yield sustainable results. Access to capital is important, certainly, but sustainable SME growth requires a comprehensive ecosystem. We must look at financial literacy, mentorship, institutional capacity, and infrastructural development.

Are these entrepreneurs trained to manage cash flow through market volatility? Is there transparency in how funding programmes are designed? Do they have access to reliable power and transport networks to get their goods to market? Without accountability, transparency, and a solid institutional framework, capital evaporates without leaving a trace of real growth. We must shift our focus toward building resilient businesses, not just liquid ones.

The Liberator Newspapers: On the issue of funding programmes, you issued a very stern warning about the politicisation of grants and loans. How deeply does this affect the entrepreneurship ecosystem?

Dr. Seyefar Clement: It paralyzes it. When intervention programmes, grants, or soft loans are distributed based on political patronage or favoritism rather than strict business viability, we defeat the entire economic purpose.

Let me be perfectly clear: these intervention funds are not free handouts. They are strategic national investments funded to stimulate economic growth, boost local manufacturing, and generate real employment. When you give funds to non-viable, politically connected entities instead of genuine, innovative entrepreneurs, you waste scarce public resources and starve the businesses that could actually transform the economy. Selection processes must be strictly merit-based, transparent, and driven by innovation and viability.

The Liberator Newspapers: Drawing from your extensive, decade-long experience advising SMEs across both Nigeria and the United Kingdom, what internal responsibilities do entrepreneurs themselves need to take more seriously?

Dr. Seyefar Clement: This is a crucial point. While we demand better policies from the government, entrepreneurs must look inward. A major hurdle for many emerging businesses is the absence of structure.

To inspire confidence among international investors, lenders, and development institutions, Nigerian entrepreneurs must develop sound financial management skills. You must maintain proper, verifiable business records and cultivate an unyielding culture of internal accountability. If an investor cannot track your revenue, understand your cost structures, or see a clear separation between personal and business finances, they will walk away. Professionalism is not optional; it is the baseline requirement for growth.

The Liberator Newspapers: Finally, Dr. Clement, what is the ultimate strategic model you envision to transform these small enterprises into sustainable engines of national economic prosperity?

Dr. Seyefar Clement: We need a deliberate shift toward a targeted enterprise development model. Both government interventions and private sector initiatives should intentionally favor and support businesses that are solving pressing social and economic challenges within their immediate communities—whether that is in agricultural processing, clean energy, waste management, or local tech solutions.

When you support a business that solves a local structural problem, you guarantee its market relevance. This approach dramatically improves the long-term survival rate of SMEs, accelerates inclusive economic development, and ensures that job creation happens where it is needed most. That is the blueprint for turning small businesses into the true anchors of Nigeria’s prosperity.

By Rejoice Egbaseimokumor

Host communities in Delta State have formally notified the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NNPC E&P Limited (NEPL) of their decision to reject the proposed 2026 Freedom to Operate (FTO) Agreement with Jones Creek Hydrocarbon Limited, citing what they described as persistent violations of host community rights and repeated breaches of previously executed agreements.

The communities, Okerenkoko Federated Community, Akpata Gbegbe Community and Ekpemu Community, all within the Jones Creek Field of OML 42, made their position known through their solicitors, Dr. I. J. Akpolu, Esq., in a petition dated June 23, 2026, addressed to the Managing Director of NEPL.

According to the petition, the communities alleged that despite signing FTO Agreements with Jones Creek Hydrocarbon Limited in 2024 and 2025, the company failed to comply with key provisions designed to guarantee host community participation and benefits.

The petition stated that the agreements required Jones Creek Hydrocarbon Limited to allow the host communities to nominate all unskilled workers and 40 percent of skilled workers employed on its operations. It also provided for community participation in contracts, subcontracts and services, including security, supplies, repairs and the integration of qualified indigenous contractors.

However, the communities alleged that these provisions were consistently ignored, accusing the company of awarding contracts without consulting community leadership, sidelining qualified indigenous contractors and delaying payments for completed jobs. They further claimed that when payments were eventually made, they were often reduced without explanation, resulting in financial losses for affected contractors.

The petition described the company’s actions as a gross violation of extant laws governing host community rights in the Nigerian oil and gas industry and a breach of the terms contained in the 2024 and 2025 FTO Agreements.

As a result, the three communities announced that they would no longer execute the 2026 FTO Agreement or any subsequent agreement with Jones Creek Hydrocarbon Limited.

Instead, they urged NEPL, as the operator representing the OML 42 Joint Venture partners, to engage directly with the host communities and ensure that all rights, benefits and obligations due to them are administered without the involvement of Jones Creek Hydrocarbon Limited.

The communities maintained that their decision followed years of alleged neglect and disregard for agreements freely entered into by both parties, insisting that they would not reverse their position unless their concerns are addressed.

At the time of filing this report, Jones Creek Hydrocarbon Limited had not publicly responded to the allegations contained in the petition.

He noted that his approach to representation has been inclusive, ensuring that no part of the constituency is left out in the distribution of democratic dividends.

The federal lawmaker maintained that his work in the National Assembly is not yet complete, hence his decision to seek another mandate to continue serving the people.

He assured constituents that he remains committed to delivering quality representation and initiating policies that will improve their welfare and living conditions.

Pondi further pledged that he would not betray the trust placed in him, promising to intensify his efforts in addressing the needs of the people if re-elected.

The atmosphere at the event reflected a mix of political enthusiasm and community engagement, as supporters cheered and expressed confidence in his leadership.

By Jasmine Binebai

A young advocate for compassion and community service, Queen Janelle Tamaratena Oghenegueke, has been crowned First Runner-Up in the Little Category of the 7th Edition of the Teen and Little Miss Humanitarian Pageant 2026, emerging as one of the standout winners in a competition defined by brilliance, poise, and purpose.

The prestigious annual pageant, organised by the Teen and Little Miss Humanitarian Pageant organisation, continues to distinguish itself as a platform dedicated not just to beauty and talent, but to nurturing humanitarian values among children and teenagers. Through its programmes, the organisation promotes kindness, empathy, leadership, and a deep sense of responsibility toward the less privileged and vulnerable members of society.

This year’s edition lived up to expectations, drawing a number of exceptionally talented young contestants. In the Little Category, Janelle competed against six other bright and determined participants in what observers described as a keenly contested and inspiring showcase of intellect, confidence, and social awareness. At the end of the rigorous selection process, she emerged as First Runner-Up, securing her place among the three queens traditionally crowned each year.

A student of Cradle School in Delta State, Janelle has already begun to carve a niche for herself as a young humanitarian. Even before clinching the title, she had actively engaged in outreach initiatives, including visits to schools where she distributed books and supported educational development projects aimed at encouraging learning among younger pupils. Her actions reflect the core vision of the pageant to raise a new generation of leaders driven by compassion and service.

As part of her responsibilities, her reign as First Runner-Up is expected to last for one year, during which she will serve as an ambassador of humanitarian ideals. She is anticipated to spearhead and participate in impactful projects that address the needs of the less privileged, further amplifying her voice as a young agent of change.

In a heartfelt reflection following her emergence, Janelle attributed her success to divine grace and expressed profound gratitude for the support system around her.

“Today, I offered heartfelt thanksgiving to God alongside my beloved family at Daily Miracles Church, Warri, Delta State. I am deeply grateful for His boundless grace, which continues to uplift my passion for humanitarian service and strengthen my commitment to positively impact lives,” she said.

She described her new role as more than just a title, but a calling to serve humanity with sincerity and dedication.

“My emergence as the First Runner-Up of the Little Miss Humanitarian is truly God’s doing. He has positioned me on a meaningful path of selfless service to humanity, inspiring me to lead with compassion, empathy, and dedication,” she stated.

Janelle further noted that the recognition marks the beginning of a greater journey, rather than a final destination.

“I recognize that this recognition is not an endpoint but a beginning. With faith as my foundation, I am committed to advancing impactful humanitarian initiatives, and I am just getting started,” she added.

Her emergence has been widely applauded by educators, family members, and community stakeholders, who describe her as a promising young leader with the passion and discipline needed to make a lasting difference.

The Teen and Little Miss Humanitarian Pageant continues to play a vital role in shaping socially conscious young individuals across Nigeria, using its platform to inspire a culture of giving, volunteerism, and purposeful living among the younger generation.

With her crown and renewed sense of purpose, Queen Janelle Tamaratena Oghenegueke now steps into a year of service, advocacy, and impact, one that is expected to touch lives and inspire hope in communities far and wide.
