A group under the aegis of Confederation of Delta State Oil Producing Ethnic Nationalities Students Union (CODSOPENSU) has appealed to the leadership of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) to pay students from the oil bearing communities bursary.

The group made the appeal during the weekend via a statement signed and issued to newsmen by the duo of Comr. Epechi Bright, President Federated Union of Ndokwa Students ( FUNS), Chairman and Comr. Oturubo Tamaramiyenmene Collins, President National Association Of Delta Ijaw Students ( NADIS), Secretary, a  copy of which was sent to The Liberator Newspapers.

The group reiterated that the last time bursary was paid to the aforementioned students was in 2018, adding that since then, the students are yet to get any bursary payment from the commission, stressing that the current leadership of the commission should look into their plights.

The statement reads in full below:

CONFEDERATION OF DELTA STATE OIL PRODUCING ETHNIC NATIONALITIES STUDENTS UNION ( CODSOPENSU).

Press release

27th December, 20202.

CODSOPENSU is a student union that embodies all students from the oil producing ethnic Nationalities in Delta State, the sole aims of this organization is to  foster unity among the various Oil producing ethnic Nationalities that makes up DESOPADEC at the grassroots level and also serve as a medium of communication between the board and the students from the oil producing ethnic Nationalities as regards the payment of the annual DESOPADEC BURSARY.

But it is painful to note that the last time  the board paid students their bursary was in 2018, and the current leadership of CODSOPENSU under the chairman of Comr. Bright Epechi who is the president Federated Union Of Ndokwa Students (FUNS), have been pleading with the board to pay students from the oil producing ethnic Nationalities their bursaries for over a year now, and the board haven’t  taken any encouraging step as regards the bursary payment, as a body CODSOPENSU have written several letters to the board, even going as far as pleading with the Executive Governor Of Delta State, His Excellency , Sen. Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa , who made it clear categorically that he has given the board the go ahead to pay the bursary but up till this moment we are yet to get any meaningful information as to the payment of the bursary from the board.

As student union leaders we are being put under severe  pressure from our members as regards the payment of this bursary , the recent payment of the state bursary has added more fuel to the fire burning, and we can’t control them any longer as they have decided to resume with DESOPADEC whenever they resume work in the new year, and they have also vowed not leave the premises until their bursaries are being paid.

CODSOPENSU as a body has done it’s bit in using all quiet means possible to achieve the aim of the payment of the bursary but we can no longer bear insults and harassment from our members , as we will be coming in numbers to stage a peaceful demonstration in front of DESOPADEC and we won’t leave until we get our bursaries.
