Members of Edo Civil Society Organization (EDOCSO), Tuesday, October 1st, embarked on a peaceful protest across major streets in Benin City, Edo State capital, calling on the Federal Government not to renew the operational license of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) which according to the Civil Society Organisation expires December, 2019.

In the peaceful rally tagged ‘BEDC must go’, Co-ordinator-General of EDOCSO’s, Leftist Omobude Agho, said the mega rally was to throw support behind the planned performance review of the DISCOs which elapses December, 2019.

“We are demanding the presidency to make the December deadline a reality as BEDC has failed in the distribution of electricity to its franchise states.

“NERC and BPE are suspects in the true assessment of reality as regard the performance of BEDC since its take over on November, 2013”, he added.

Also speaking, spokesman of the Civil Society Organisation, Leftist Osazee Edigin described the move by BEDC in addressing the press against their protest on Monday as another wild goose chase, as he accused management of the company of gross incompetence in service delivery.

He said no amount of blackmail will stop them from ventilating their anger against acts that tend to undermine the rights of Nigerians.

Recalled that BEDC addressed the press on Monday where management of the company refuted EDOCSO’s claim that the company’s operational license expires December 2019.

BEDC management urged members of the public to disregard such, saying “there is no expiration of license of BEDC as alleged.”
