Wants Okowa, Buhari To Save Affected Communities

Member representing Warri South West in the Delta State house of Assembly, Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor on Wednesday moved a motion on the floor of the Delta State House of Assembly on the need to urgently address lingering issue of dying fishes in the waters of the state.

Hon. Guwor while moving the life saving motion noted that “The environment is an irreplaceable asset deserving of our care and protection for the benefit of the next generation.”

While drawing the attention of the Delta State Governor, His Excellency, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa on the prevailing circumstances bedeviling the arears, Hon. Guwor urged the Governor to draw the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari to launch investigation into the situation.

The young legislator also called on Governor Okowa to direct the state ministries of environment and Oil and Gas to immediately carry out public enlightenment campaign in the areas to avoid health hazards that could arise from the consumption of the dead fishes.

Guwor warned that the dead or dying fishes in the waters of Delta could be harmful to the human health, stressing that on no account should anyone consume such fishes.

The affected communities contained in the motion include the entire Gbaramatu Kingdom, Ugborodo Communities, all communities in Orere area in Warri South West Local Government Area and Ogheye and other communities in Warri North Local Government Area, Ekemetagbene in Bomadi Local Government Area, Akparemogbene, Oyangbene and all the communities in Ogulagha and Iduwini kingdoms in Burutu Local Government Area respectively in Delta State.

The motion reads in part below:

Today in response to the incessant cases of dying fishes along the shore lines of river Forcados, Escravos and their tributaries, I raised a motion pursuant to Order VIII, Rule 43 of the Delta State House of Assembly Rules as a matter of urgency calling on His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Delta State, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa to urge His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria:

1. To launch an investigation into the issues and conduct adequate assessment of the affected communities which includes the entire Gbaramatu Kingdom, Ugborodo Communities, all communities in Orere area in Warri South West Local Government Area and Ogheye and other communities in Warri North Local Government Area, Ekemetagbene in Bomadi Local Government Area, Akparemogbene, Oyangbene and all the communities in Ogulagha and Iduwini kingdoms in Burutu Local Government Area respectively in Delta State.

2. Come up with plans to protect the biodiversity and natural resources of the affected areas from total extinction, especially the endangered species, through counter mitigating measures.

3. The Delta State Governor to direct the state Ministries of Environment and Oil & Gas to carry out public enlightenment sensitization campaign on the health hazards and harmful implications of the consumption of dead fishes either smoked or dried; in order to avoid an outbreak of epidemic in the affected communities.

4. Relief be sent to the affected communities in a view to alleviating the sufferings of the fisherfolk.

This is a solemn duty we owe our people, to give them better life by protecting them and their livelihood.

It would be recalled that Hon. Guwor is the Chairman house committee to the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC)
