There seem to be hope of better life for dwellers of the coastal region of Delta State as bill seeking to established Coastal Areas Development Agency (CADA) awaits legislative action.

The Liberator Newspaper can report that the state governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori on Wednesday received draft copy of the bill.

The Bill was initiated by a community leader and renowned environmental rights activist, Amb. Comr. Sheriff Mulade, a Peace Ambassador, who hails from Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta state.

The draft was a fallout of several media reports and public aspirations calling on the Delta State Government to create an interventionist agency that would enhance the development of the oil rich riverine communities of Delta State.

The bill documented some of the major challenges confronting coastal dwellers to include flooding, pollution/ waste management control, degradation of coastal habitats, ocean surge, coastal erosion and loss of aquatic biodiversity, inadequate social intervention such as hospitals, schools and portable water as well as lack of physical infrastructure.

The initiator said, the bill is in line with the demands by Deltans in the coastal communities seeking a better welfare which can only be made possible by creating an agency that will fast track the development of coastal communities in the State.

The coastal areas of Delta state is part of the critical economic resource base of Nigeria, being an oil producing area, but has not much to show for such contribution to the nations economy.

Meanwhile, there is already wild jubilation in many quarters following the receipt of the bill by the state government as it is believed that better days awaits the coastal people when the bill finally becomes an act.
