The need for unity among the various ethnic groups in the Niger Delta was brought to bear at the epic 4th anniversary and fund raising ceremony  of the Liberator Newspapers Worldwide.

The event which held at Wellington hotel Effurun on Thursday attracted both the middle class and mighty in the country particularly the Niger Delta region.

Speaking at the occasion, the chairman of the 4th Anniversary of The Liberator Newspaper, Hon. Dr. Prince Michael Diden told guests  that unity and love among the ethic groups in the Niger Delta region is the most viable  panacea for  the undervelopment facing the region.

According to him, the various ethnic groups must assist each other in whatever legitimate means to engender sustainable human and infrastructural development for the common good of the region.

He warned against ‘pull him down syndrome’ which some persons employ to frustrate people specially when they are not from the same ethnic background saying “ Ijaw, Urhobo and Itsekiri ethnic nationalities must continue to love and support each other for development to thrive.”

While congratulating the publisher of The  Liberator Newspapers Amb. Binebai Yerin Princewill for attaining an important milestone in the quest to tell the Niger Delta story and beyond,  he promised to continue supporting the medium to enable it achieve its mandate.

Delivering the anniversary lecture on the theme, “The Niger Delta and Post Oil Era:The Role Of The Media” the vice Chancellor of Niger Delta University Prof. Samuel Edoumiekumor represented by associate professor Sunny Abraye noted  that the Niger Delta area have suffered marginalisation and deprivation despite it’s vast economic contribution to the Nigerian State.

He admitted that indigenous media such as The Liberator  has a very vital role to play in telling the real story of the people and should not abdicate the role to the foreign media who have little or no knowledge about the real challenges of the people of the region.

The decried  the quantum of destruction of aquatic organisms and degradation of the environment through oil spillage and indiscriminate dumping of toxic waste which has impacted negatively on the social and economic life of the people.

The associate professor however warned against  over dependent on oil by the country because of the devastating effect it will have on the economy of the country when it dries up.

He therefore advised indigenes of the Niger Delta region to start thinking out of the box by investing in non oil sectors such as agriculture and  other mineral resources which the region has in abundance.

Earlier, in an address of welcome, the Publisher of the Liberator Newspapers Amb. Binebai Yerin Princewill  thanked the people for finding time to grace the auspicious occasion despite their busy schedules.

Speaking further, Binebai said “the theme of the Anniversary lecture was coined out considering the firm believe that the Niger Delta region is arguably  one of the most violated, raped and abused region of the world despite her huge natural and human endowment and how the media can be used to effectively correct the age long evil within the Nigerian state.”

He noted that the media has a very critical role to play in the reportage of the challenges of the region and that forms part of the core mandate of the Liberator Newspapers.

He said the liberator will continue to be the voice of the silent minority through objective and unbiased presentation of news for the betterment of the society.
