Apex group housing all Ijaw Human Rights Activists in Delta State under the auspices Delta Ijaw Comrade Community (DICC) has roared and condemned in totality the tear-gassing, shooting and brutalizing  of students peacefully protesting for the payment of their  outstanding bursaries by the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) by police officers attached to the commission.

The condemnation was contained via a statement personally signed and issued to newsmen in Warri earlier today by Amb. Comr. Binebai Yerin Princewill, President general of the Delta State Ijaw Comrade Community (DICC) on behalf of the group, a copy of which was sent to The Liberator Newspapers Worldwide.

Binebai particularly called on the Inspector General of Police in Nigeria to fish out those brutal police officers that dare to shoot at the peacefully protesting students, stressing that no amount of bullets, bomb and intimidation can ever quench a legitimate demand for what is normal.

However, the Ijaw Comrade Community had narrated that  a lot of students are now in various hospitals in Delta State following the tear-gassing, brutalizing and intimidation of the students by trigger happy police officers attached to the commission yesterday (Wednesday 15th June 2022).

“As a group, we totally condemn this act by DESOPADEC, this is a simple matter that can be resolved through dialogue. We are using this medium to sound a note of warning that no police officer have the right to take the life of fellow Nigerian without committing  a crime. The shooting yesterday was barbaric and uncalled for. The police is not above the law.

“At this point, we are adding our voice to the Students from the Delta State Oil Producing Communities that the commission should urgently commence payment of the bursaries meant for the Students.

“We are also calling on the Management of DESOPADEC, particularly Askia Ogieh, MD of the Board to take full responsibility in paying for the medical bills of the injured  students.

“The Managing Director of DESESOPADEC, Askia must not make us believe that he is not capable to manage the commission. This type of leadership is no longer fashionable in our present society. Political leaders should know that whatever stone you throw into the public will surely boomerang. A word they say is enough for the wise.”

Meanwhile, the Delta Ijaw Comrade Community had called on His Excellency, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Governor of Delta State to look into DESOPADEC with particular regard to the bursary and to prevail on the commission to quickly commence payment.
