Indigenous People of Niger Delta Commends Rochas For Calling IOCs To Order

A pressure group, Indigenous People of Niger Delta, IPND has commended the Former Governor of Imo state and Senator of the federal republic of Nigeria Rochas Okorocha for his voice to the plight of the oil bearing communities in the Niger Delta region.

IPND gave the commendation through a press release signed its President General Prince Tiemo.B. Pumokumo and obtained by The Liberator Newspaper on Thursday.

Okorocha had through a motion on the floor of the senate bemoan the lack of efficient Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) by oil companies operating in the Niger Delta region and urge the house to call the oil companies to order.

While commending Okorocha for the motion, the group noted that ” the Federal Government institutions who are supposed to protect the rights of the Host Communities are weak and intimidated which makes them loyal to the Oil dollars of the IOC’S”

IPND described as unfortunate the fact that ” Nigerians in general do not seem to care or are ignorant of the many challenges being suffered by Communities who are Host to the various international Oil companies. ”

The group however urged the government to take urgent steps in addressing the many challenges of the Niger Delta region or face renewed hostilities against the oil companies.

” Urgent and drastic actions must be taken to protect the economic and environmental rights of the Niger Delta Region or we will be forced to shut down every Oil drilling operations carried out without considering the environmental, Health and economic challenges of the Host Communities.”
