IYC Commends Governor Obaseki On Gelegele Seaport, Plea For Maritime Academy

Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Western Zone has commended His Excellency, Godwin Obaseki, Governor of Edo State for his vision to establish a seaport at Gelegele community in Olodiama Kingdom. The Liberator Newspapers Worldwide can report. 

The IYC  noted  that the project when completed will create job opportunities and address the age long marginalization of Ijaw people in Edo, the entire state and beyond. 

While commending Governor Obaseki for the development, the IYC Western Zone speaking through its secretary, Comr. Olu-Derimon has also appealed to the Edo State Governor to consider the establishment of a maritime academy in the area. 

The I YC Zonal scribe stated this, at a stakeholders meeting, tagged: ‘Family Meeting,’ to ensure harmonious relationship of Ijaw communities in Edo State with the state government held recently. 

Present in the meeting: were Engr Gregory Ogbeide, Chairman Seaport Committee, Engr Pius Donyegha, Hon Joel Bisina (PhD), Bishop Dr Godwin Soroaye, Mr. Ikponmwosa Osayande, Chief Robison Ogunkoru INC Western Zone Chairman, Edo GIST team and the surveyor General of Edo State.

Speaking shortly with newsmen after the meeting, Olu-Derimon said: “IYC Western Zone ably  led by Dr. Doubra Collins Okotete Chairman IYC Western Zone is here in Benin city the State capital to throw its weight behind the governor of Edo State for the establishment of Gelegele Seaport in Ijaw area. We believe this will go a long way to reduce youth restiveness, militancy and unemployment in our areas and by extension Edo State.”

“So, I commend Governor Obaseki for this laudable project and urge him to also establish a marine academy in Gelegele community” he said.

Calling on Governor Obaseki to cement the trust Ijaw people have for him and appoint Ijaw sons and daughters into the state executive council, Comr. Olu-Derimon prayed that the dream of establishing the seaport should be a reality as soon as possible. 

Olu-Derimon said that: “Ijaw youths in the State are happy with the project. The nature of the family meeting is for all communities to be involved, and this is a clear indication that every Ijaw youth in the state is  happy over the seaport project.”

Reassuring the committee that the youths will work assiduously to create an enabling  and peaceful environment from the cradle of the project to its final stage; while appealing for Governor Obaseki to establish a marine Academy in Gelegele in replacement of the Technical school he promised to build in Gelegele during his electioneering campaigns at Gelegele in 2016.  

He said, this will enable youths in the State to aquire the technical skills to work in various aspect of the seaport which will ultimately create the technical know how to manage a seaport.
