Jubilation in Niger Delta as Binebai wins African solo literary award

There seems to be endless jubilation in Niger Delta as one of the region’s literary scholar, associate Prof. Benedict Binebai wins the 2019 African Solo Awards.

The award which was given to Binebai for his contributions to the development of solo performance in Africa was the latest literary appreciation for his works that is now known and read in the African continent and beyond.

It would be recalled that a solo performance, sometimes referred to as a one-man show or one-woman show, which features a single person telling a story for an audience, typically for the purpose of entertainment.

This type of performance comes in many varieties, including autobiographical creations, comedy acts, novel adaptations, vaudeville, poetry, music, and dance. In 1996, Rob Becker’s Defending The Caveman became the longest running solo (one man) play in the history of Broadway.

The Solo Award

However, Associate Prof. Benedict Binebai is the Head of Department, HOD Theatre Arts, Niger Delta University, NDU, Amassoma, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State.

He has won many awards ranging from journalism, drama and was in 2018 honoured as the best Bayelsa State lecturer of the year.

Meanwhile, in his reaction to the award, the literary luminary had dedicated the award to the Lord Almighty, describing it as a very special award.

The associate Prof. Had particularly noted that his two solo plays Karena’s Cross and My Life in the Burning Creeks have placed him on this continental level of solo performance in Africa.
