A leading pro Ijaw group under the aegis of Ijaw Peoples Development Initiative (IPDI) has called on the top hierarchy of the Nigeria military to prosecute the officer that allegedly shot and killed Mr. Danzu Michael, an Ijaw son in Delta State recently.
The Ijaw Peoples Development Initiative made the call earlier today via a statement signed by the duo of Comr. Austin Ozobo and Comr. Mayor Ogobiri, president and acting spokesman respectively, a copy of which was sent to The Liberator Newspaper.
The duo of Ozobo and Ogobiri had particularly wondered on the alleged military brutality meted out on the South South region, stressing that if that is replicated in Sambisa forest where there is heavy war against the dreaded Boko Haram sect, it would have been better.
IPDI however, blamed the alleged military brutality of Ijaws on the muteness of Ijaw leaders.
They particularly called on the Army CO 3Batallion Warri, Delta State and the chief of Amy Staff to swinge into action by bringing the military officer to book, which according to them would serve as a deterent for other officers that may indulge in such move.
The statement reads in full below:

Press Release

8th April, 2020

IPDI CONDEMNS KILLING OF DANZU MICHAEL IN BENET BY NIGERIAN MILITARY, WANTS THE PERPETRATORS BROUGHT TO JUSTICE

It is sad that the Military whose primary duty is to protect lives and properties is now resorted to taken innocent lives indescriminately with slightes or without provocation. This clearly shows that Nigerian military has been infiltrated by the deadly Boko Haram sect that is bent to eliminate every southerner and Christians in the country.

We got a distress call from family members of the deceased and were briefed on the Military killing of DANZU MICHAEL, an Ijaw youth in Benet area in Delta State on the 8th April, 2020. The said youth specialized on fishing and fetching of firewood. In the morning of April 8, 2020 the deceased was coming from fishing expedition when he was accosted and shot dead.

The Military were patrolling the area in that morning and took him for oil bunker and shot him immediately without any provocation or confrontation. We are dismay on what Nigerian soldiers are turning to.

Assuming but not conceding, if the late DANZU Michael was a Bunker ,does that form a ground to exterminate him. These Military barbaric Killings continues because our leaders failed to speak out and condemn it.

We are not at war with Nigerian government to have been killed in daily basis. It is sad that Nigerian military does not has value for lives and decided to kill wilfully at every point in time.

The military brutality displayed in South South if it was exercised in Sambisa forest, by now the issue of Boko Haram would have been a thing of the past.

Nigerian military is unprofessional and good at attacking soft targets. The Nigerian Military is now known for being indisciplined. No respect for human right. It is better to live with animals in the forest to have lived with Nigerian military.

It is our candid call that the CO of 3battallion, WARRI, Delta State and the chief of army staff should swing into action and investigate the circumstances surrounding the unlawful and barbaric Killing of Mr. DANZU Michael in 3days, in a view of bringing to book the killer Military officers to avoid legal action.

Signed

Comr. Ozobo Austin

National President Ijaw People’s Development Initiative, IPDI.

Mayor Timi Ogobiri

National Acting spokesperson, IPDI.

Nevertheless, it would be recalled that the corpse of slain Michael Danzu has since been deposited into an undisclosed mortuary in Warri, Delta State as series of meetings among family members have been taking place.

Meanwhile, The Liberator Newspaper learnt that late Michael Danzu hails from Ofougbene and Ogulagha communities in Iduwini and Ogulagha Kingdoms, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.

All efforts geard towards reaching out to the military proves abortive as at the time of filling this report.
