Nigeria Maritime University Okerenkoko: Massive Protest Looms Over Workers Welfare
Workers in the Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State seems to have been grumbling in silence for a long time now.
However, some of the workers in the University that hinted The Liberator Newspapers Worldwide but would not want their names to be mentioned in print had asserted that the workers are mobilising on a looming massive protest to press forward their demands.
According to them, they will be protesting against their welfare owing to the non payment of workers allowance in the institution.
Some workers narrated that they have not been paid their allowances from May 2019 till date.
In their words: From May 2019 till date, we have not been paid our allowance. While those employed in April that started work in May 2019 had not received any allowance and other benefits that is due them.”
Nevertheless, beyond the allowance, the aggrieved workers are also demanding from the management of the Institution under the leadership of Prof. Emmanuel Munakurogha Adigio (MNSE, MNIM) Vice Chancellor of the Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko to also urgently adjust the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System ( IPPIS ) salary scale to reflect special status as a specialised institution like the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Efferun, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron and others.
The workers had called on both the management of NMU and the Federal Government of Nigeria to build structures for the institution, stressing that the lecture halls are getting congested by the day, particularly the Okerenkoko campus of the institution.
In their words: “We cannot continue to work under such poor welfare particula
rly the Okerenkoko campus where staff don’t even have office space and class rooms to lecture.”
Meanwhile, the angry workers said: “They promised to pay as soon as money enters the school but when money finally come into the school they are not considering payment of the allowance and other benefits that due us. If this continues without any move to pay us, we will have no choice than to fight for our rights and privileges through peaceful protest and it is going to be massive “.
