Operemor Kingship: Angele Wade Into Tussle, Suspends Selection Process

In a swift reaction to the prevailing security situation in Operemor Kingdom in Burutu Local Government Area  of Delta State over the enthronement of a new King, the chairman of Burutu local government, Rt. Hon. Godknows Angele summoned the parties in dispute to a security meeting at Maxim Lotus in Warri on Wednesday, May 5, 2022.

In the meeting were the Burutu Council Chairman, the Local Government Secretary, the DSS, the DPO, Chief Bare Etolor, Chief Ondokare Fufeyin, Hon. Felix Okporu, Benjamin Oroso, Ayangor Goodluck and Hausa Walter.

The meeting was allegedly prompted by a letter written to the Local Government chairman by the eldest man of the clan (ebeokosu-owei), Chief J.O.Seibai.

The letter was written to draw the attention of the chairman to the impending crisis in the kingdom and request him to intervene immediately to forestall it.

However, the tension in the Kingdom  is said to have been ignited by the action of the chiefs to go ahead with the process by attempting to conduct elections for kingmakers across the kingdom despite a strong admonition by the court that none of the parties should do anything further while the matter is still pending.

It was learnt that the aggrieved party  led by Hausa  Walter mobilised  forces to openly engage the chiefs in a physical confrontation if not for the chairman’s timely intervention.

The Hausa Walter led group is made up of Operemor clan members who styled themselves as “Concerned indigenes of Operemor”.

It was learnt that they challenged the kingship selection process in the Bomadi High Court for not following what is contained in the Gazette. They alleged that the chiefs who have no single role in the selection process are working desperately to hijack the process to install a king without other Operemor people.

They said the chiefs, led by Chief Bare Etolor of Bomadi (a non-indigene of Operemor), are also usurping the powers of the Ebeokosu-owei who is the only person with the authority to call a meeting of all Operemor men of forty (40) years and above to elect a new Ebenanaowei.

After a careful assessment of the case, the chairman ordered both parties to sheath their swords and stop whatever activity they are doing or about to do regarding the kingship selection.

He specifically warned that the chiefs should stop the purported selection of kingmakers with immediate effect. The chairman further promised to invite all the aspirants to a meeting on a separate date to devise ways to resolve the case.

When The Liberator Newspapers Worldwide contacted, Hon. Sunny Perekeme, Secretary of Burutu Local Government Council confirmed the suspension of the Operemor Kingship selection process, stressing that the Council Chairman is working to resolve the matter.
