Kou Kingdom communities in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, have cried out that suspected deadly chemical sprankled into river Forcados has flowed with the tide to river Ramos, destroying aquatic bodies, particularly fishes in the area.
The alarm was raised by the trio of Mr. Patrick O. Irou, National Chairman, Kou Kingdom, Burutu Local Government Area, Delta State, Comr. Matthew Wurus, Chairman Okibou Zion Community as well as Mr. Preye Wanfede, Chairman Youtu community on behalf of the entire seven (7) communities constituting Kou in Delta State.
The affected communities include “Youtu, Agge Okibou, Okibou Zion, Okia, Belle, Kate-epre, Okofaka”, all in Kou Kingdom, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.
The trio had maintained that the massive death of fishes in the area recently has become unprecedented and scary, stressing that both the leaderships of the seven communities and her people have continued to wonder on what sort of chemical that could be killing such large quantities of fishes in the river.
They warned that SPDC must henceforth stop whatever chemical that they are introducing into the waters, adding that both the aquatic bodies and human life is in great danger.
Patrick, Wanfede and Matthew stated that the toxic substance had brought untold hardship to the people as they depend solely on fishing for survival, maintaining that since the calous pollution of the river by SPDC, fishing no longer make meaning as they hardly catch fish with their hooks, nets and other fishing traps which was not so before the strange substance.
However, the community leaders had called on SPDC to think the way forward on the life threatening issue by first providing relief materials and work modalities for adequate compensation to ameliorate the affected communities urgently.
Meanwhile, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Delta State Government, particularly the ministry of Oil and Gas, Burutu Local Government Council leadership, NEMA, NOSDRA and other relevant agencies had been called upon to immediately take action on the matter.
