Says It Will Promote Peaceful Coexistence Among Youths

With the aim of uniting and promoting peaceful coexistence amongst Ijaw and the Itsekiri ethnic groups, environmental activist and coordinator of Center for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ), Amb. Sheriff Mulade, yesterday inaugurated the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the second edition of the Ijaw/Itsekiri Peace and Unity tournament initiated and sponsored by him.

The Local Organising Committee is chaired by Kenneth Nwaomucha, Val Ada Arenyeka Deputy Chairman, Honourable (Chief) Jeffrey Ojogun serves as

Secretary while several others fall under the sub committees category in their different units.

Inuagurating the Committee, Comrade Mulade, in his speech disclosed that the committee members who were carefully selected comprises of technocrats, renowned sport administrators and development stakeholders.

He hinted that the committee main purpose was to help in the selection process, preparation, planning, rules and regulations, as well as discover football talents at the grassroot level in Warri area and other parts of Delta State.

“This committee which comprises technocrats, renowned sports administrators and development stakeholders, is to help in the selection process, preparation, planning, rules and regulations, as well as discover football talents at the grassroot level in Warri area and other parts of Delta state.

“CEPEJ believes that with your experience and knowledge in sports, coupled with your potentials, you will deliver on your mandate and run the programme successfully with the support of the NGO where necessary”, he added.

According to the initiator, since the maiden edition in 2017, the tournament has so far engaged more than 1,200 Ijaw and Itsekiri youths, adding that many youths in the riverine communities of Warri South-West local government area have been empowered, their psycho-social well-being, resilience and self-esteem enhanced.

Comrade Mulade was optimistic that the event will no doubt help to foster socio-economic and health development in the communities, as well as promote peaceful coexistence among Itsekiri and Ijaw youths in Warri and its environs.

He expressed hope that the purpose of organising the tournament and of inaugurating the LOC would be realised and not be defeated.

It would be recalled that the unveiling of the Local Organizing Committee members was done at the office of the Center For Peace in Ugolo, Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, near Osubi.
