Youths from the oil rich Yokiri community in Ogulagha Kingdom, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State has issued a two months ultimatum to the management of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in the community to urgently fix the water system or face stoppage of the entire water project. The Communique was signed and issued to newsmen in Warri yesterday, a copy of which was sent to The Liberator Newspapers Worldwide by the duo of Comr. Tombrapagha Oleh, Youth President of Yokiri community and Mr. Kingsley Tuma, Youth Secretary. The communique noted that the Yokiri Water System has not been working since 2013, stressing that this is allegedly 8 years after that the people have been drinking contaminated water from the river.

President Tombrapagha and his Secretary Mr. Tuma had in the communique warned that unless the Yokiri Water System is fixed within two months, failure to do so by SPDC will lead to total shutdown of the entire water project as well and the SPDC water tankers will not be allowed to collect water from the water treatment plant.

The Youths have stated that the non fixing of the Yokiri Water System has led them to be drinking contaminated water from the river which according to them has largely contributed to health challenges in the area.

The communique asserted that the youths are left with no other choice than to issue the ultimatum as several letters have been written to the management of SPDC to fix the pipes for water distribution to indigenes of the community but all to no avail.

The ultimatum reads in full below:

ULTIMATUM FOR SPDC TO RESTORE YOKIRI WATER SYSTEM

The entire youths of Yokiri Community, Ogulagha Kingdom, Burutu Local Government Area, Delta State call on the attention of SPDC to restore the Yokiri Water System. The water line which has not been working since 2013 has put the entire community into drinking contaminated water from the riverside which is not good for human health. This has largely contributed to the environmental health challenges in the area. Letters have been sent on several occasions to SPDC but yet nothing has been done.

As a result of this, we the entire youths of Yokiri Community have come to a conclusion to issue two months ultimatum to SPDC from the date this letter is written.

We consider SPDC a very critical stakeholder to us in our Community and for this cause we want to make it clear that between now and the two months ultimatum which will elapse on the 1st of October 2021 if the Yokiri Community water pipe is not restored to supply water to our good people, we will be tempted to stop the entire water project, even the SPDC water tankers will not be allowed to collect water from the water treatment plant.

Reiterating the resolve of the Yokiri Community Youths to shut down the entire water treatment plant, if our two-month ultimatum is ignored by whosoever contractor that is in charge. “WE SHALL SHUT DOWN. And when we say we are shutting down, there will be no activities in the water treatment plant”.

Thanks, Yours faithfully,

Signed:
Comr. Tombrapagha Oleh.
Youth President

Mr. Kingsley Tuma
Youth Secretary
