The long-awaited Agula Festival begins today in Ofougbene Community, Iduwini Kingdom, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, as the revered Agula masquerade makes its powerful appearance to commence the ancient cultural and spiritual celebration.

From the early hours of today, the once quiet riverine community has come alive with anticipation, as indigenes, cultural enthusiasts and traditional worshippers converge to witness the opening rites of a festival widely regarded as one of the most spiritually significant in the Niger Delta.

At exactly 1:00 pm, the sacred Agula masquerade is expected to emerge, marking the official commencement of the festival. Known for its deep spiritual authority, Agula will perform ritual cleansing of the land, driving away evil forces while invoking prosperity, fertility and peace upon the people.

For the Oborotu people, this moment represents more than tradition, it is a spiritual reset, a sacred encounter believed to unlock blessings and restore harmony within the community.

Speaking ahead of the outing, a community source described Agula as “the foundation of the entire festival,” noting that its appearance sets the tone for all subsequent activities.

As evening falls, the cultural tempo will rise with the dramatic display of the Oborotu Yeipade masquerade, scheduled for 7:30 pm. The performance is expected to thrill spectators with its rich symbolism and energetic presentation.

Adding to the excitement, High Chief Kingsley Takemebo, popularly known as Mienkuro, will take the stage with a live musical performance, entertaining guests and dignitaries well into the night.

The Agula Festival will continue after a brief pause on Sunday, resuming on March 30 with the appearances of Amagiomor, Eferemowene and Ama-Ikiye masquerades, before reaching a grand finale on March 31 with the symbolic outing of the Benikpkobiokpo masquerade.

Renowned for its deep cultural roots and spiritual relevance, the Ofougbene Agula Festival remains a major cultural attraction in the Niger Delta, drawing participants and observers from across the Ijaw nation and beyond.

As activities begin today, Ofougbene stands at the centre of cultural expression and spiritual renewal ready to witness yet another historic outing of the ancient Agula.
