A Non-governmental organisation (NGO), under the umbrellar of Nigerian League of Women Voters (NILOWV), has called for increased women participation in governance and equal opportunities at all levels for nation building.
The Edo State Chairperson of the organisation and erstwhile Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Elizabeth Ativie, said this on Monday during a courtesy visit to Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists in Benin city.
According to her, the startling statistics of women in governance is worrisome and it is imperative to accelerate the participation of women in all arms of government, corporate bodies and to stimulate women towards entrepreneurial skills.
While lamenting on the restriction of women in leadership position and low representation of female voters, she called for synergistic support from media to help remove impediments to equal participation through information dissemination.
She further called on Nigerians to pay attention to the girl-child education, adding that its implication to national development can not overemphasized.
Elizabeth noted that they intend to recruit members from rural areas and plan to meet their target of 5,000 membership before the end of August.
