Says Egbema indigene must become next council chairman

A Niger Delta based socio cultural group operating under the auspices of Ijaw Defenders Movement, IDM has raised an alarm by urging the Delta State Governor, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa to correct the alleged age long political slavery in Warri North Local Government Council before it deteriorate to something else.

This was made known to newsmen in Warri recently via a statement by the president general of the group, Comr. John Gbozimor, a copy of which was sent to The Liberator Newspaper.

The renowned Niger Delta socio cultural group had emphasized that an Ijaw son or daughter from Egbema Kingdom in Warri North Local Government Area must become the next chairman of the Local Government, adding that enough is enough.

Comr. Gbozimor had noted that the Ijaws any where can never be slaves to any tribe, arguing that since the creation of Delta State and the Warri North Local Government Area, an Ijaw son nor daughter had ever become chairman of the council or occupies any other meaningful position, despite the fact that the Local Government is exclussively inhabited by the Ijaws of Egbema and the Itsekiris.

The group had frowned that the Egbema people have both the human capacity, population and even economic power to occupy any position, stressing that they have neither occcupied the House of Assembly seat nor the House of representatives position.

In their words: “This iron fisted political slavery and sustained manipulation must stop now, we will no longer seat down to watch while we are treated like second class citizens in our God given land, its only once that we have occupied the speakership position in the Local Government legislative chamber.”

It would be recalled that the Warri North Local Government Area has ten (10) federal wards out of which the Ijaws of Egbema Kingdom has four (4) while their Itsekiri brothers has six (6).

However, the Ijaw Defenders Mandate, IDM had described the political imbalance going on in Warri North as a political evil taken too far, stressing that Governor Okowa must by all means correct what they described as a political error during the next council polls by ensuring that, an Ijaw man from Egbema Kingdom becomes the next chairman.

Nevertheless, Egbema is an ancient Ijaw Kingdom that is presently politically balkernized into present day Delta and Edo states with nine (9) autonomous communities, with which five are in Edo state under Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State while the other four communities are in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The ten wards constituting Warri North Local Government Council include Ebrohimi, Eghoro, Gbokoda, Polobubou (Egbema) Koko I, Koko II, Ogbinbiri (Egbema iii), Ogbudugbudu (Egbema iv), Ogheye and Opuama (Egbema i) ward respectively.

Meanwwhile, a background research conducted by The Liberator Newspaper reveals that Warri North is a local government area in Delta State with administrative headquarters in the town of Koko.

Warri North local government area falls under the Southern Senatorial District of Delta State otherwise known as Delta South Senatorial District alongside Bomadi, Burutu, Isoko North, Isoko South, Patani, Warri South and Warri South-West local government areas.

Warri North local government area also forms a federal constituency alongside Warri South and Warri South-West local government areas.

Warri North local government area covers an area of 1,841 km². The local government area is bounded to the north by Edo State, to the east by Ethiope West and Sapele local government areas, to the south by Warri South and Warri South-West local government areas, and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.
