Governor Dickson: Why Bayelsa Suspended PDP Campaigns For APC Presidential Rally

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State on Tuesday suspended its campaigns for the 2019 general elections.

Governor Seriake Dickson said in Yenagoa that the decision by the PDP to suspend its campaigns was due to the presidential rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the state led by President Muhammadu Buhari, who is also the presidential candidate of the party.

He said the office and person of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria must be respected during visits to the state, irrespective of political differences.

Dickson explained that he had to put the intensified political campaigns of the PDP on hold to receive Buhari in honour of his exalted position as President of the country.

The governor, however, said that while he had respect for the office and person of the President, he was opposed to the policies of his administration and political party, APC.

He stated that Bayelsa under his leadership would continue to do the right and decent thing, observing the standard protocol of extending formal courtesies to visiting President and Vice President.

He recalled that he had to observe the official protocol for extending courtesies to visiting Presidents when he received the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who led the APC train to campaign against him and his party in 2015.

Dickson said, “Today we are showing the finest part we are made of. We Bayelsans are indeed decent and honourable people. Today we are here as a state to welcome our President, who is wearing two hats.

“On the one hand, he is President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and leader of our country and, on the other hand, he is the leader of his party and the presidential candidate of that party.

“But you see, our standard here in Bayelsa which we have shown time and time again, sometimes at great cost, but we insist on doing what is right, what is civil, decent and proper for our people so that generations will learn to do what is right at all times.”

He thanked the Chairman, Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council, and the royal fathers and leaders of the state for assembling to receive the president
