How Engineers Can Increase Nigeria’s HDI, By Engr Ali – The Liberator

Engr Dr. Sony Emeka Ali, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Civil Engineers, says if Nigeria is desirous of improved human development index (HDI), it must make conscious efforts to develop technologically.
Ali bared his conviction during a lecture titled “High Ethical Conduct of Engineers as Veritable Tool for National Development” delivered through interactive zoom application meeting recently organised in Warri by the Engr. Benjamin Ozobeme-led Warri branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. .
The lecturer of the day stressed that achieving technogical advancement itself required compliance by Nigerian engineers to ethical standards in their professional practices, clearly provided by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). Ethical standards expected of Engineers, according to him, include confidentiality, responsibility for safety, balanced outlook on law, loyalty to organization, respect for constituted authority, honesty, equity, dedication to public health, safety and welfare, amongst others.
He informed: “Nigeria’s human development index (HDI) between 2010 and 2019 are just marginally different. Countries with higher HDI are obviously more technologically advanced”.
Ali maintained that “if Nigeria must advance higher technologically, engineers, technologists, technicians and artisans must latch on germane policies of government such as local content on the foundation of a well-oiled and soundly oriented ethical professional practices”.
