FLOOD: Angele Receives Burutu Local Government Palliatives From DESOPADEC For Onward Distribution

While presenting the massive relief materials to Hon. Godknows Angele on behalf of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) for onward distribution to the flood victims, Amb. Dr. Comr. Shedrack Agediga, Executive Director (ED), Planning, Search and Statistics (PRS) explained that DESOPADEC as an intervention agency and a creation of the Delta state Government is only playing a complementary role to the State Government. 

The Executive Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Amb. Dr. Comr. Shedrack Agediga stated that the commission has earlier dispatched its media team to ascertain the level of damages caused by the ravaging flood, adding that DESOPADEC is aware of the sufferings of the people hence as an interventionist agency, they cannot keep mute to see their people suffering without rendering such kind of assistance. 

However, In an interview shortly after the presentation and handing over of the relief materials to the Burutu Local Government Council Chairman for onward distribution had further sympathized with flood victims in Burutu Local Government Area and beyond. 

He noted that the flood has actually caused a lot of havoc to the people, describing the flood as unprecedented and the worse so far in the history of flood in Nigeria, adding that DESOPADEC as a responsible agency is doing what they can by providing the relief materials for the flood victims in order to ameliorate their sufferings. 

Nevertheless, Amb. Agediga have expressed optimism that by the grace of God, the flood will recede, praying that the Lord Almighty should have mercy on his children. 

Angele Appreciates DESOPADEC, Call On Shell To Assist Flood Victims In Burutu  

On his part, shortly after receiving the relief materials from DESOPADEC, in an interview, Hon. Godknows Angele had heavily appreciated the entire board of DESOPADEC for reaching out to the flood victims in Burutu Local Government Area and beyond at the point of their need. 

He noted that Burutu Local Government Area is heavily affected by the flood, adding that the situation is terrible over there in Burutu as the flood have displaced many homeless in the various communities. 

Speaking further, Angele said while there is an IDP Camp in Burutu Primary School for flood victims in Burutu Local Government Area, the flood victims have refused to come to the IDP camp, a situation he said makes the Burutu flood case a peculiar one as council and the flood management committee will have to go round to the communities to deliver the relief materials to the people at their doorsteps. 

According to him, everywhere is shutdown in Burutu Local Government Area following the ravaging flood as farmlands have been submerged as well as fish farming is no longer lucrative owing to the flood. 

Angele  asserted that the community chairmen and Burutu Local Government flood management committee members are all on ground to deliver the relief materials to the various communities. 

Meanwhile, Angele have appealed to Shell Development Company to urgently come to the aid of the flood victims in Burutu Local Government Area, while commending, Hon. Julius Pondi, member representing Burutu Federal Constituency, House of Representatives, Hon. Asupa Peter Forteta, member representing Burutu North, Delta State House of Assembly and DESOPADEC for reaching out to the flood victims so far. 

The Burutu Local Government Council Chairman asserted that the council have also purchased their own relief materials that have been distributed to the flood victims in Burutu Local Government Area recently, stressing that he is just coming from Burutu, the headquarters of the Local Government as he will be returning back today.

It would be recalled that while Dr. Paul Bebenimibo, commissioner representing Ijaw Ethnic Nationality on the board of DESOPADEC was fully on ground for the presentation and hand over ceremony, the Burutu Local Government Council Chairman was accompanied by the flood management committee members, councillors including leader of the Burutu Local Government legislative Arm, Rt. Hon. Spencer Takeme. 

Some of the items presented to the Burutu Local Government Council Chairman for onward distribution include, pillows, mosquito nets, foams, kegs of palm oil, kegs of  groundnut oil, spoons,  cups, plates, buckets, rubbers, Indomie noodles, bags of rice, bags of beans, bags garri, sacks of pure water , bed spreads, wrappers, slippers, bags of salts, tubbers of yams and others too numerous to mention.
