The Edo State Government has revealed that it will carry out autopsies on the 10 unidentified corpses discovered in the state on Monday.

This was made known by the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare while briefing journalists after the weekly Executive Council (EXCO) meeting chaired by Governor Godwin Obaseki, at the Government House in Benin City.

Some of the bodies were discovered by farmers on their way to the farm in the early hours of Tuesday between Ibillo and Lampese on the Lagos–Abuja Road, in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the state.

The farmers alerted some vigilantes, who combed the area and found more bodies.

The commissioner described the incident as “heartbreaking,” and explained that the state government would carry out autopsies on the bodies to determine the circumstances surrounding their mysterious deaths.

He said, “The collaboration between the vigilante group, the hunters and the police led to the discovery of corpses of 10 young men, aged probably between 23 and 25, along a bush path.

“They were killed and there were no identifying marks to identify them or even know the cause of death of these young men as there are no signs of trauma or anything to determine how these men were killed or how they died.

“The Edo State Government is very saddened by this occurrence and has ordered that an autopsy be carried out to determine the cause of death and for the police to investigate to find out who they are, how they got there and what happened because the government is not pleased with the news.”
