How N30,000 Loan for Girlfriend Turned Into N300,000 Debt, Nearly Crushed My Life — Content Creator Baami
Nigerian content creator, Samuel Adegbeyi, popularly known as Baami, has recounted how a N30,000 loan he took to support his former girlfriend’s business reportedly ballooned into more than N300,000, leaving him in severe financial and emotional distress.
Baami, who shared his experience while reflecting on his difficult childhood, education and eventual rise in the digital entertainment industry, said the debt crisis became one of the darkest periods of his life.
According to him, he borrowed about N30,000 from an online loan platform and combined it with his personal savings before giving the money to his girlfriend to help her establish a business.
However, he said things changed after she received the money, while the short repayment period attached to the loan made his financial situation increasingly difficult.
“The loan had a very short repayment period, and because I couldn’t repay on time, the interest kept increasing daily. Eventually, a loan of about N30,000 grew to more than N300,000,” he explained.
Baami said he resorted to borrowing from other online lending platforms in an attempt to settle the initial debt, but the strategy only plunged him deeper into financial trouble.
He disclosed that the situation lasted for almost a year and severely affected his emotional wellbeing and ability to function normally.
“There was a period of about four months when I could barely function. I stayed indoors most of the time, and the friend I lived with took care of me. He cooked for me, and sometimes I ate leftovers the following morning because I could barely take care of myself,” he recalled.
He described the period as one of the most challenging experiences of his life, adding that he survived it through what he described as the grace of God.
Difficult childhood
Baami also opened up about the difficulties he experienced growing up.
He said his father became seriously ill while he was in secondary school in 2009 and eventually died.
Following his father’s death, Baami said he moved in with one of his father’s relatives, where he continued his education.
After completing secondary school in 2015, however, he said financial difficulties prevented him from immediately pursuing higher education.
He later stayed with a neighbour who initially cared for him but, according to him, eventually began treating him poorly.
Baami said another neighbour subsequently noticed his situation, listened to his story and offered him accommodation.
Despite the challenges, he said he remained determined to become an accountant.
From HND student to content creator
Baami said his journey into content creation began in 2024 while he was in his final year of an HND programme.
He initially resisted the idea of becoming a content creator because he did not want to expose his private life or become a public figure.
However, a fellow student who later became his manager continued encouraging him until he eventually agreed to try content creation.
Baami said the decision eventually changed the direction of his life.
At the time, his primary ambition remained becoming a chartered accountant. However, as his online presence grew and opportunities started coming his way, he realised that content creation could become a sustainable career.
He subsequently decided to commit himself fully to the profession.
First major TikTok earnings
Baami said his first major earnings from social media came through TikTok, after his manager encouraged him to regularly host live sessions.
During the live broadcasts, viewers supported him through virtual gifts and financial contributions.
He said he initially did not understand that the gifts could be converted into money.
According to him, his first major TikTok payment was approximately N500,000.
He later expanded his activities to Facebook, where he began earning in January 2026. His first Facebook payout, he said, was about $200.
Baami currently has approximately 1.3 million followers on Facebook. He also disclosed that his main TikTok account, which had about 1.4 million followers, was banned several months ago.
He now operates a backup TikTok account.
Working with popular entertainers
The content creator has also featured alongside several established Nigerian skit makers and entertainers, including Oluwadolarz, Nasboi, Shank and Cute Abiola.
Baami said his experiences working with the entertainers have largely been positive, describing them as supportive and encouraging.
He recalled that Cute Abiola once corrected and guided him on a particular performance without making him feel embarrassed.
According to him, the experience encouraged him to continue learning and improving his craft.
Facing discrimination
Baami, who has a physical condition, said he experienced discrimination while growing up and attending school. He recalled that some classmates initially avoided associating with him because of his appearance.
However, he said their attitudes changed after they got to know him and discovered his abilities.
He also admitted that hurtful comments about his appearance affected him emotionally at different points in his life and sometimes left him deeply depressed.
Rather than allowing those experiences to define him, he said he chose to concentrate on self-improvement.
Uncertainty over his condition
Baami said there has never been a single explanation within his family regarding the cause of his physical condition.
He recalled that his mother believed it might have been connected to childhood immunisation, while she also suggested it could have been inherited from his father.
His grandmother, however, reportedly gave a different account, saying his father was not born with the condition and that something happened to him later in life.
Baami said he therefore grew up hearing different explanations from members of his family without receiving a definitive answer.
Choosing content creation over accounting
Despite obtaining qualifications in accounting, Baami said he currently has no intention of using his certificate to seek conventional employment.
He explained that content creation has provided him with opportunities and income that enable him to pay his bills.
He also noted that many of his former classmates were still trying to complete the National Youth Service Corps programme, while he had already exceeded the applicable age requirement.
Baami said he would rather concentrate on developing his digital career than place himself under unnecessary pressure.
He has also expanded his presence to YouTube, although he said the platform has not yet started generating income for him.
Hope for marriage and a global career
Despite his painful experience in his previous relationship, Baami said he still hopes to marry someday.
He said his family has encouraged him to settle down but admitted that finding someone who genuinely loves and supports him could be difficult.
According to him, his growing fame and financial success have also made it harder to determine whether some people are interested in him because of his personality or because of his money and popularity.
Nevertheless, he said he remains hopeful that he will eventually find genuine love.
Looking ahead, Baami said he hopes to transform his content creation career into a global brand within the next three to five years.
He said his audience already extends beyond Nigeria, with followers from countries including India and other parts of the world.
Baami expressed confidence that his story and content would eventually reach a much wider international audience.
For him, the painful experiences of his past, including the crushing debt that once disrupted his education and nearly brought his life to a standstill, have ultimately become part of the journey that led him to discover content creation.
He believes that if the debt crisis had not delayed his return to school, he might never have met the person who encouraged him to enter the digital space.
“Everything happens according to God’s timing,” he said, reflecting on the experiences that ultimately redirected his life.
