Kalabari Se-ikpangi Stakeholders Hold Critical Meeting, Congratulate 9th NEC Of IYC, Discuss Other Issues 

Communique Issued at the end of an extraordinary Congress of the Ijaw Youth Council, Elders’ Council and critical stakeholders of Kalabari Se-ikpangi, held on the 4th of August 2023 at Tema town in Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The meeting which reviewed state of the Kalabari Nation was presided over by its Youth Chairman, Comrade Edward Asikitams and the following resolutions were reached;

1. The IYC Kalabari Se-Ikpangi congratulate its 9th National Executive Council led by Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr especially her illustrious sons who emerged as Secretary and Deputy Mobilization; Comrade Maobuye Nangi Obu and Comrade Abiye Bob-Manuel, respectively.

2. The IYC Kalabari Se-Ikpangi condemn the activities of sea pirates in our waterways, creeks and Rivers. We therefore call on the Governments and security agencies to wade into this issue in order to curb this ugly menace. May we state unequivocally that we shall take all necessary steps to protect our people, if the government fails to act.

3. We condemn the clamour for the removal of the Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari (Alabo Edi-Abali) led security outfit from the Emohua-Kalabari road by the Rivers State Government and declare vote of confidence on the security outfit aforementioned.

4. All contractors handling projects in Kalabari land and its environs should with immediate alacrity complete such projects within the time frame given. Forthwith, no abandonment of any project (s) in whatever guise will be condoned.

5. All awardees of contracts in Kalabari land should ensure strict compliance with the petroleum industry Act (PIA) and Local Content laws applicable to their areas of Specialisation.

6. All oil companies, local and international operating within Kalabari land and its environs should ensure strict compliance with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), Nigeria Local content laws and other local and international regulations as they affect the host communities where they operate.

7. Contractors are expected to mobilize to site for completion of their abandoned projects in Kalabari land, failure to act accordingly ,will not be viewed with clemency.

8. It is the resolve of the IYC Kalabari Se-Ikpangi to protect and project the interest of our people taking cognizance of our MODUS OPERANDI as a socio-cultural and Pan Niger Delta pressure group.
To this end, the following committees have been formed and inaugurated to investigate, monitor, evaluate and ensure implementation of the above resolutions:

(a) Oil and Gas Monitoring and Implementation Committee

(b) Project impact, assessment and evaluate committee

(c) Peace and conflict resolution Committee

(d) For purpose of smooth running of Council and to usher in new formidable chapters and special areas Executives. All chapters, LGAs and special areas of the Ijaw Youth Council Kalabari Se-Ikpangi have been dissolved and an Electoral Committee formed led by Comrade Kwame Omoni.

9. Conflicts between or amongst communities in Kalabari land and its environs must be settled amicably to avoid possible escalation.

10. May we also draw the attention of state government, local government, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and oil companies to the deplorable state of Tema bridge which require urgent intervention to prevent accidents and to ease transportation and unhindered movement within and around Tema Community and its neighbour, Ifoko community.

11. Furthermore, we specifically implore Honourable (Dr) Dakuku Peterside to ensure the completion of the awarded Tema internal road project which he has since abandoned and for which the community has gone into litigation with him.
